Al's

On the Corner of N Wells St and Ontario sits Al's. Al's is a local legend in Chicago known for it's dogs and especially it's Italian Beef Sandwiches. That's why I'm here today, because I saw this place on the food network and knew that I must try a Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich.

Al's are located all over town and I heard the owner talking about a new location soon, but come to this one if you want to sit down; because most the other Al's are standing only with no tables to sit at. The menu is not extensive, but what's the point when your sandwich is this good. The young lady behind the counter greets me with a genuine smile and asks if I'm ready to order.

"Legendary Beef Sandwich" I read off the wall.
Here comes the options.
"Sandwich or Meal?"
I choose the meal that comes with a drink and home made fries.
"Sweet Peppers or Hot Peppers?"
I choose both, because I like a lot of flavor. Then she asks the important question.
"Dipped?"
Duh, yes dip it.
I barely sit down and they call my number. Good I'm starving right now.

It looks good and you can see the juices soaking through the wrapping paper of the sandwich. I have a few fries to wet my appetite for the rest of the meal. One look at the fries and you know they have never seen a freezer. Fresh, fresh, fresh, and fresh fries.

Here we go.

Love at first bite. It's like an explosion of flavor in your mouth and before I start to chew my right arm has juices flowing down to my elbow. Sounds sick and messy. Yes it is. If by, sick, you mean wickedly awesome and if you mean messy, well it is that too, in a good way? My face starts to melt off. They are not kidding about the hot peppers being hot. I am at a very serious crossroad now. Do I have some more fries or more sandwich. Do to the dip, I decide to keep eating the sandwich, the sandwiches structural integrity may not handle being set down and picked back up over and over again. Besides, the beef is shaved thinner than I've ever seen and it melts in your mouth. Much like my face is doing. I win! I finish my sandwich first and beg the cooks for more napkins. A lot of napkins are key. Trust me. Then I dive back in and finish my fries. Wow, I'm full!

Now, I understand what the big deal is about. Make your trip to Chicago a big deal too and hit up Al's for an Italian Beef Dip Sandwich. You can thank me later.
